Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park
Rolling hills with vast heathland and woods, one of the finest nature areas of Overijssel.

Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park is one of the finest and most varied nature areas in Overijssel, a short drive from Bed & Wijn at De Kasteelhoeve in IJhorst. For walkers, cyclists and nature lovers this rolling landscape is a wonderful destination. The vast heathlands, dense woods and wide views make a day actively out in nature an experience, with plenty of peace and space along the way.
Hills, heath and woods
Unlike the flat Reest valley, the Sallandse Heuvelrug has real differences in height. Push moraines, formed in the ice age when the land ice pushed up the ground, create rolling hills topped with vast heathlands and dense woods. From the higher parts you have, on clear days, a wide view over Salland — special when the heath turns purple in late summer and the landscape is bathed in soft light. It is one of the largest contiguous heath areas in Northwest Europe.
Walking through the national park
The park is criss-crossed with countless walking routes, from short strolls to sturdy day hikes. Along the way you pass heath, woods and fens, and the landscape keeps changing character. Anyone who enjoys walking will find routes here for every level, with easily passable paths and a viewpoint in several places where you can catch your breath and enjoy the panorama.
Cycling over the ridge
For cyclists too the Sallandse Heuvelrug is a rewarding area. Fine cycling routes run over the ridge and through the surrounding villages, where you occasionally have to pedal hard to get to the top — but the descents and views make up for that amply. The junction network makes it easy to plot your own route, short or long as you wish.
The black grouse and the wildlife
The Sallandse Heuvelrug is one of the last places in the Netherlands where the rare black grouse occurs. The open heath landscape forms the ideal habitat for this special bird, which has all but disappeared elsewhere in our country. With a bit of luck and in the right places you also spot deer, birds and other animals that feel at home in the peace of the park.
Peace and space
Despite its popularity, the area is large enough to seek out the silence. Early in the morning or towards the evening you often have the heath almost to yourself, with only the sound of the birds around you. It is precisely in those quiet moments that the Sallandse Heuvelrug shows itself at its finest.
A day of nature from IJhorst
From Bed & Wijn the Sallandse Heuvelrug is a fine destination for a day actively out in nature. Combine it if you like with a visit to the nearby Avonturenpark Hellendoorn or a drive through the Vecht valley near Ommen. There are plenty of other destinations to choose from too.
