Things to do

The Weerribben

The largest low-lying peat marsh in Northwest Europe, with lakes, reed beds and marsh woodlands.

The Weerribben

The Weerribben-Wieden is one of the most remarkable nature reserves in the Netherlands and the largest low-lying peat marsh in Northwest Europe. Just a short drive from Bed & Wijn in IJhorst, you can discover a unique water world here that you will find nowhere else — an unforgettable outing during your stay in the Reest valley. Anyone who loves boating, birds and wide-open vistas will find this National Park an endless source of peace and adventure.

A landscape shaped by human hands

The landscape of the Weerribben-Wieden is no accident. It was created by the toil of peat cutters and reed harvesters who, over the centuries, left behind a world of narrow strips of land. The dug-out channels where the peat was dredged away are called 'weren', and the strips of land on which it was laid to dry are called 'ribben' — hence the name. The result is an enchanting mosaic of lakes, waterways, reed beds, marsh woodlands and quaking fens, with a rich flora and fauna that draws nature lovers from all over the country.

Boating, canoeing and whisper boats

This is above all an area to discover from the water. Glide through the narrow waterways in a hired boat, canoe or whisper boat and enjoy the peace and the birds along the way. A whisper boat, with its silent electric motor, is ideal for getting close to the wildlife unnoticed, without disturbing the silence. Along the way you pass idyllic spots, thatched roofs and old drawbridges, and let yourself be surprised by the vastness of the marsh.

A rich world of birds and wildlife

The Weerribben-Wieden is a true paradise for birdwatchers. Special species live in the vast reed land and marshes, and with a little luck you may spot the rare otter, which feels at home again in this water-rich area after years of absence. The large copper butterfly, an extremely rare species, also finds one of its last habitats here. Those who give nature time are often rewarded with a special sighting along the way.

Walking and cycling through the marsh

If you prefer to stretch your legs, you will find countless walking and cycling paths that lead straight through this unique natural landscape. At the visitor centres you can find routes and information about the origins of the area and its special nature. Early in the morning, when mist hangs over the water and the first birds awaken, it is at its most beautiful. A cycling tour along the narrow dykes takes you past places you cannot see from the water.

Picturesque water villages

Scattered throughout the area lie charming water villages, with the world-famous Giethoorn as the best known. With its characteristic wooden bridges, canals and thatched roofs, this village is rightly called the Venice of the North. But smaller places such as Dwarsgracht and Ossenzijl breathe the same peace and charm, often without the crowds of the high season.

Every season its own atmosphere

The Weerribben-Wieden shows a different side throughout the year. In spring it bursts with new life, in summer the reed land turns golden yellow and boating is wonderful, in autumn misty mornings hang over the water, and in winter a deep silence reigns over the marsh. Every season is worth setting out again.
